Southern right whales migrate from Antarctic feeding grounds to the sheltered waters of southern Australia during winter to mate, give birth and raise their calves. Once pushed close to extinction by commercial whaling, their populations are slowly recovering, although they remain far less abundant along the east coast than humpback whales. Their broad backs, lack of a dorsal fin and distinctive white callosities make every encounter unmistakable.
